Projects

Smart Start Project

Our first Smart Start project was for the start of school in 1999, when we provided school supplies kits to every kindergarten student in the Athens City School District. Now we provide them to every incoming kindergartener in Athens County. This year we did 588 kits. For more information on this very special project, click here.

Downtown Athens Awards

The Downtown Athens Awards are a way of honoring longtime active members of our club by giving $1,000 to their favorite charity. In our first year (2013) presenting these awards we gave out 8 of them! Checks were presented to representatives of the charities at our annual Installation Dinner. Here are their names followed by the name of their charity:

Evelyn Houk - Hopewell Health Centers
Joanne L'Heureux - Good Works
Julia Nehls - Athens Head Start
John Deno - Southeastern Ohio Food Bank
Mike Wootton - Athens City-County Health Department Dental Sealant Program
Dick Piccard - My Sister's Place
Howard Dewald - the Kiwanis Cabin at Camp Kootaga, Allohak Council Boy Scouts of America
Cliff Houk - O'Bleness Birthing Center

In 2014, we gave out one award as follows:

Alan Goldsberry - Athens County Historical Society and Museum.

Athens Invitational Marching Festival

Now in its 41st year, this is the third oldest marching festival in the State of Ohio. Several of our members have been helping with the festival since the beginning. For more information and some great pictures, click here.

Members of the OU Collegiate Music Educators National Conference stand ready to help make the 2011 Festival a success.

CHAD Stickers

CHAD Stickers are identity stickers that are designed to go on infant and child car seats to identify the child in the case of a car accident or other emergency. Julia Nehls has taken the lead on passing out hundreds of these stickers. For more information, click here.

KidsFest

KidFest is sponsored by Athens County Children's Services and is in its 28th year. It is a wonderful day of concerts, games, prizes and fun. Hundreds of children from all over Athens County participate. We've been happy to paint faces these last few years :) For more information, click here.

Athens Bike Rodeo

We help out at the Annual Athens Bike Rodeo, sponsored by the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, from 9 AM to noon.  Members on board are usually: Mike Hunter (on bike), Steve Noftz (on bike), Jed Butcher (leading the slow/narrow handling line for children), and Julia Nehls (cheering section). A few scraped knees and elbows, many new helmets, many bicycles tightened up, seats raised, training wheels off, and riding lessons and escorts provided. We had a great morning!
